Farming is not just a job, it’s a life. A way of life passed down through generations. But behind the green fields and hard work, many farmers in the UK are struggling in silence.

The truth is: farming is one of the most stressful and lonely jobs today. You work long hours, often alone, with little time to rest. The weather, market prices, and costs are out of your control. And on top of that, many farmers don’t feel they can talk about how they really feel.

But this silence is dangerous.

In the UK, suicide rates in farming are the highest of any job. Studies say that one farmer takes their own life every week. And it’s not only older farmers. Young people in farming are also worried; almost 95% of farmers under 40 say mental health is one of their biggest concerns.

Why? There are many reasons. Long days alone. Financial stress. Pressure to keep the farm running, especially when it’s been in the family for years. And in many rural areas, people still think talking about mental health is weak. This makes it even harder to speak up.

And now, a new challenge is coming, the changes to inheritance tax.

From 2026, the UK government plans to remove tax relief for farmland passed on through families. For many, this means facing big tax bills with no cash to pay them. Farmers might have to sell land just to afford the tax. This has caused protests across the country, and charities and MPs warn that mental health problems will get worse if nothing changes.

At My Black Dog, we believe nobody should go through this alone.
